I am still using it on my older, late 2009, 27 inch screen iMac, running both OS X Mountain Lion and OS X Mavericks to power an older, no longer available sound enhancement app.
I am not sure if Soundflower still works with new Macs running the new macOS Sierra, though.
The problem is no developer website to download this from and you can't trust any other download sites to download it from.
Did you keep the original, last version of SoundFlower plugin available from the original developer's website before development of this plugin ended?

As far as i am concerned soundflower is a legitimate piece of software. I've had it installed on most of my macs over the years and it has never given me any trouble.
It is getting on in age, there isn;t a lot of new development going on with it but if still seems to perform as it should even on Mountain Lion.
Having said that thee are other posters here who will tell you not to install it. As it does add an extension to the kernel there is always the possibility of it causing problems. If you do experience problems on your system and if this (or any third party kexts are installed) you will need to remove them for troubleshooting purposes.
All in all I find soundflower a valuable bit of software and I'd be disappointed if the time came that I was not able to use it anymore.
